Should You Get A Water Dispenser?

Thank author of this post/comment

Some friends of mine who had moved together to a new home have been recently searching for a portable water dispenser to place inside their apartment. I recently joined them in their search in one of those appliance centers in the malls. There were water dispensers of different kinds and sizes: tabletops, stand-alone models, and even those with cabinets underneath.

I never had the appreciation for these water dispensers. I have always viewed them as a complete waste of money if you are going to put them at home. If this is in an office setting, then by all means, do so. But not in the home where a refrigerator, I think, is good enough for me. If not for the other products that have to be stored, even a no-refrigerator is actually good enough already.

Why so? Water dispensers have their own motors that keep the water cool. Refrigerators use the same mechanism as well. Though refrigerators use more electricity than water coolers do, you can obviously put in more items to cool in a refrigerator than in a water cooler. In this age when refrigerators may be very difficult to dispose, adding in a water dispenser to your array of home appliances is an obvious waste of money. Some refrigerators even have their built in water dispensers in the first place.

But then, these friends of mine do not keep refrigerators in the first place. They don't cook. They just get their food outside, in which case a water cooler (and heater) seems to be a logical option. I hope they just don't get surprised when the electricity bill comes in and they found out just how much electricity is consumed by their chosen appliance. Right now they are looking at the water dispenser as the first appliance that they will purchase.

Perhaps that's just me. I just need a lot of water to drink. I don't really need the water to get cooled.
