The Furniture MachineMovement and Fluidity in the House
Basically, a house is a place where you feel really comfortable at, even when you're just by yourself. But most days when you are tired from work, or feeling stressed by the environment ouside your home, you want something more to relax on. That's when aquariums enter the scene. I have recently observed that more and more people are installing aquariums into their houses. When asked, they go in chorus in saying that an aquarium with dozens of fish relaxes them. Aquariums indeed add movement, fluidity and life to what might otherwise be an empty space in the house, promoting relaxation. But nowadays, people install them not just for its relaxing effect, they install aquariums as a way to decorate their houses. If one needs a de-stresser, a normal-looking, normal-sized aquarium with quite ordinary fishes would be good enough. But for someone who sees fish and water more than that, they use aquariums to make an elaborate interior design. Used to be, large, showpiece aquariums can only be found in high-end hotels, resorts and pubs. But more recently, they found their way to residential spaces. Aquariums built into walls, hanged in the ceiling, embedded on bathroom walls and used as room dividers are quite the normal showpiece aquariums. But I've seen more than that. A friend owns a 750-gallon aquarium that is also their dining table. I once joked that he might mistook the swimming fish as the menu for today. He said his 4-year old son already tried that.
