If you have a lot of furniture at home and a cat, the worst damage that your furniture may be subjected to are cat scratches. Imagine having a leather sofa in one piece before you go to work and, upon arrival at home, you realize that your precious expensive leather sofa is now marked with cat scratches. What a headache!
It sounds like an annoying behavior, but for cats, that is perfectly normal because it is in their nature to scratch. One of the primary reasons why they do this is to be able to exercise their paws and arms like some form of physical therapy. Scratching also helps cats to clean their claws. For cats in the wild, scratching is a way for them to mark their territories through the scratch marks and the scent that they leave in the process of scratching. This is all perfect behavior of cats so the best thing that we can do is to make sure that they are scratching the right place. There is a practice for some cat owners to declaw their cats through surgery. This kind of practice, however, is discouraged by many veterinarians because they believe that declawing is painful for the cats, not to mention that they lose one of the most important parts of their bodies. If you do not want to take that option (and I suggest you don't), you will have to provide your cats with abundant scratching opportunities outside of your home furniture. Cats particularly like to scratch right after eating and sleeping. Putting up scratch posts in those areas where they normally eat and sleep could go a long way to train your cats in proper scratching. Yelling or spraying a bit of water before a cat scratches one of your furniture also helps. These activities do not harm them in any way, but they will be able to understand later that scratching furniture is associated with the shouts and the spray of water, which they really do not like. Either that or you can put toys near the appropriate scratch posts instead as a form of positive reinforcement. Training your cat to use a scratchpost is not that hard. It's just like training your cat to use the litter box. It takes time and persistence, but it definitely can be done. Worst case scenario is that you will have to cover the parts of your furniture easily accessible to your cat by covering it with scratch-resistant materials. You can talk about...
